Trying to Figure it Out

There is a topic that I wish more people would openly discuss. As business owners, parents, employees and humans in general, we are all just trying to figure “it” out. Whatever “it” may be for you.

Imposter syndrome

A psychological experience where someone feels like an intellectual fraud.

Having worked with many business owners over the years, I have witnessed this in reality and wish more people would openly communicate about the struggles they face as business owners. Why do we feel like we need to have all the answers? Because the reality is that we do not. If we had all the answers, there would be no need for any sort of support or expert help. It is okay to admit when you need back up and seek it out.

“I’m not sure, but I can find out.”

This is a statement that I have learned to embrace throughout the years, and it has served me well. The power in this statement is often missed. We put pressure on ourselves to be all knowing and if we are not, we feel like an imposter in our industry. In today’s world, information is quite literally at our fingertips. The power to seek out answers and find alternative ways of approaching problems or tasks is amazing. AI is proving to be a great resource when used appropriately as well as the countless sources of information available on the web.

Now this is not to say that just because we can, we should. There is also power in seeking out expertise from those in other fields. Not only does this help support the economy, but this also broadens your network of contacts and helps you build relationships. I have often times found myself making assumptions about other people and their knowledge of certain things. And let me tell you, I am often dead wrong. You know what they say when you assume….you make an a** out of you and me. Ha! The bottom line is that we are all just trying to figure it out.

The amazing things we can learn along the way prove to be invaluable. As someone who has grown in my field of web design, I will admit that I am constantly learning. I love challenges and tasks coming my way that require some research and consideration. These tasks can often challenge my skillset and help me grow. Do I sometimes feel overwhelmed? Yes, of course! Positive self talk and openly communicating with clients about things beyond the scope of my zone of genius, is the key to building trust and success. I remind myself that I can almost always find the answer or at least point people in the right direction.

The next time you find yourself overwhelmed or unsure, ask yourself this question: Am I limiting myself by my own beliefs in my abilities as a human? If the answer is yes, dig a little deeper and try and solve the problem. And by all means, if you lack the time and expertise, throw some money at the problem and move on! Making connections and growing your network are equally as important to the success of a business.

If I can support you with any tasks on your “to do” list for your business, please reach out. I truly believe in the power of community. When one of us wins, we all win. Cheering for you!
